Conversation with Eric Schüldt

Eric Schüldt makes wonderful programmes on Swedish radio, among them Text and Music, which interweaves melody with poetry. He has always been convinced of the existential stakes of literature, unconvinced by those who would draw too sharp distinctions between literature and ‘reality’. He spoke once, in an interview, of how as a child he read a story about a very poor boy in Italy who ‘in a given passage went off to fetch water. And at that point I stopped reading. I was waiting for him to come back’. It is good to be able to read like that – and it’s a rare quality in a world in which no one has time. I recently had the joy of speaking with Eric in another one of his programmes called The Seekers. We spoke of books, of course; of the sense of things; and of how sometimes we can catch a glimpse of eternity in a pair of eyes. You can listen to our conversation (conducted in Norwegian and Swedish) here.
